SPOC Grid Inverter Technologies

In the decades since SPOC’s launch, the company has experienced exceptional growth. Sales, which in it’s ? year were at ??, are now at ???. Beyond just those numbers, the company has also become a market leader and something of a giant slayer, gaining ?? in market share, often at the expense of some of the biggest players in the business.

The oil and gas market, however, can be extremely volatile, subject to deep downturns in price and demand. For instance, the Great Recession caused a bear market in oil and gas, sending the price of a barrel of crude from nearly $150 to $35 in just a few months. Then again, in 2020, the industry was hit by a double whammy, caused by the pandemic lockdown and a price war fought by Saudi Arabia and Russia.

As a result, prices took a precipitous drop and U.S. crude oil production fell by 8% in 2020, the largest annual decrease in the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s records. The oil and gas industry reeled.

Challenge:

Help research and then develop a new venture with exceptional growth potential to which SPOC can apply its core strengths.

Result:

The new company, SPOC Grid Inverter Technologies, provides a hedge against downturns in the oil and gas industry, and is projected to grow with an expanding market. Also, it will allow the company the opportunity to help customers produce energy via environmentally friendly and economically solid solutions, thereby helping reduce emissions and stem climate change.

A New Direction

SPOC, however, had already begun a plan to diversify and not be so reliant on oil and gas. Concerned not only about steep declines in demand and prices, but also seeing opportunity in efforts to develop greener energy worldwide, the company launched SPOC Grid Inverter Technologies.

The new venture still relies on much of the same technology behind its line of inverters. Instead of automating processes in artificial lift and water handling, as well as vapor recovery and gas compression, SPOC’s grid inverters balance energy supply and demand for hybridized power systems used in on- and off-grid applications.

Can we plug in that quote from Andrew here?

A hybridized system uses power from multiple sources, which could be fossil fuel-, renewable-, and storage-based solutions. Balancing that power supply with what’s needed in real time is a complex task, especially using renewables, such as solar and wind, which are inherently inconsistent and can cause supply interruptions.

The cost of storage, aka batteries, has come down, however, making such hybrid systems more reliable and, therefore more applicable to more situations, including marine, as well as farming (and yes, oil and gas) operations in areas where the grid is not available or desirable. Batteries are important, because they can store power when supply is high for those times when it’s not, or when demand simply increases.

More specifically, SPOC’s innovative inverters not only convert power from DC to AC seamlessly, these products apply the exact amount of power needed for the application required in real-time, no matter the source. Unlike any other product on the market, its user-friendly interface simplifies the complicated task of running a hybrid system, much like SPOC’s VFDs do for the oil and gas industry.

A Foundation for Diversification

With a company culture that stresses innovation and a never-stand-still attitude, SPOC already had the foundation in place for development of such a new venture. Its personnel were onboard, as were we at FitzMartin, to find the most fitting opportunity, then research, develop, and launch it.

Like so many of the things SPOC and FitzMartin do to together, our work with regards to SPOC Grid Inverter Technologies is not typical of a client/agency relationship. SPOC brought us in on the ground floor, as we helped scrutinize the market for the most applicable new product, again one that had upside and one that utilized SPOC’s collective skillset.

We also researched what potential customers need from such a product and what was already in the offing from existing companies in this space. Now, post-launch we’re helping increase name recognition and helping move potential customers along their journey to purchase.

The launch of this new company is a testament to SPOC’s strategic mindset, to proactively address challenges and do so with a determined, yet studied approach. But we should emphasize here that what has also gotten this new venture off the ground, as well as propelled the company through some extremely hard times, is that trademark SPOC culture.

As we noted earlier in this case study, SPOC has focused considerable effort on defining its values. Through its Lift Up initiative, it’s nurtured a culture that emphasizes the importance of one’s coworkers, community, country, and customers, as well as one’s own self. At its core, SPOC is also all-in on innovation, and that offers a foundation from which to push through the downturns and reach up to meet the opportunities, whenever they present themselves.

That’s a springboard to great things, and we at FitzMartin are proud to be a part of SPOC’s past, present, and future.
